Product

What is Lightspeed?

Lightspeed is an isotonic and sugar-free rehydration powder based on NASA's expired patent for rapid rehydration, fit for your lifestyle. 🚀 Our isotonic solution is precisely designed to match your blood’s osmolality so that it can be rapidly absorbed without modification in your stomach.

What are the ingredients?

You can find the list of ingredients on the Lightspeed shop page. See the supplement facts here!

Does Lightspeed have caffeine?

Lightspeed Rapid Rehydration is caffeine-free!

Is Lightspeed sugar-free?

Yes, all Lightspeed products are and will be sugar-free! 🎉 One leading school of thought in hydration was that glucose (sugar) accelerates the hydration process by activating the pump in your intestinal wall that pushes electrolytes to the bloodstream.  However, NASA’s groundbreaking and extensive research proved the opposite. They found that carbohydrates – sugar in particular – make the product less effective. While sugar is faster acting, it’s shorter-lived. By not consuming carbs or sugars using Lightspeed, you’ll stay hydrated for longer.

Is it Vegan? Gluten-free? Keto-friendly?

Yes, yes, and yes! Lightspeed is vegan and free of gluten, sugar, and carbs, designed to fit your lifestyle.

What is the flavor?

Lightspeed Rapid Rehydration has a tart, tangerine flavor.

What is the shelf life?

Lightspeed's shelf life is one year.

How should Lightspeed be stored?

Lightspeed should be stored in a cool, dry place.

How do I take Lightspeed?

Mix one stick pack of Lightspeed in 12-16 oz of water. Drink as needed to hydrate!

Can I take Lightspeed with medication?

Please double-check with your doctor prior to taking any products you haven’t taken before, including Lightspeed. You can find the list of ingredients here.

Is Lightspeed FDA approved?

FDA approval is related to drugs only. The separation of drugs vs dietary supplements is based on claims by the manufacturer related to efficacy, but not actual efficacy. I.e., a dietary supplement can be just as effective as a drug but hasn't gone through FDA trials necessary to make drug-type claims. Lightspeed is in the category of dietary supplements, just like Emergen-C, for example. In this category, the FDA will make sure the product is safe and manufactured in a safe way, but will not comment on efficacy, that's up for the consumer to decide. So technically, "no", but it's not really a black-and-white issue like most people think. All of our products are manufactured in an FDA-regulated facility and made in the USA. Things that technically classify as dietary supplements cannot get FDA approval because they do not have claims. Rather, their production must be overseen by the FDA.

Are there any negative side effects?

There are no known negative side-effects of Lightspeed. As always, please double-check with your doctor before taking Lightspeed.

What causes dehydration?

Did you know that 75% of people are dehydrated? Dehydration occurs when you lose more fluids than you take in. Even something as natural as breathing causes your body to lose water, and increased physical activity, which increases sweat, causes a depletion of electrolytes. This manifests itself in a number of identifiable ways – including fatigue, cramping, increased heart rate, brain fog, dry skin, and thirst.

Why not just drink more water?

That seems like the logical solution! However, water alone doesn’t hydrate you quickly or efficiently. Especially if you’re active, on a low-carb diet, live in high altitudes, travel, or live in drier conditions. Generally, we get electrolytes from our diets, but if you’re active or on a specialized diet, such as keto, paleo, or low-carb diets, you’re eliminating processed foods, which contain high levels of sodium, and you’re likely not getting the appropriate amount of sodium to stay healthy. Low-carb diets are also diuretic in nature, meaning, kidneys excrete electrolytes at a higher rate. These electrolytes are necessary to enable many of the body’s biological processes, including proper function of the heart, muscles, nerves, even sleep. That means it’s even more important to replace electrolytes, keeping you at maximum performance. That’s why we created Lightspeed to get you feeling your healthiest, most productive, and optimally hydrated. The only sugar-free, NASA-inspired, keto-friendly, vegan, USA-made formula that hydrates you effectively and quickly. Everything you need, nothing you don’t.

What is osmolality?

Osmolality refers to the density of osmotically active particles (such as sodium, other electrolytes, carbs, or flavoring) in your bloodstream’s plasma. The higher the density measured, the higher the osmolality. Osmolality is also an indicator of your water-electrolytes balance and is critical in determining the best methods of rehydration. Maximum absorption in the bloodstream happens when a solution is equal to the osmolality that naturally occurs in your body, otherwise known as isotonic osmolality.

Optimal hydration happens when a solution is isotonic or equal to the osmolality that naturally occurs in your body (275-295 Omol/L). Isotonic solutions do not require any modification in your body before being absorbed into the bloodstream, because they have the proper ratio of water to electrolytes. It's the fastest and most effective method of rehydration. Learn more here.‍

What happens when a solution isn't isotonic osmolality?

Anything outside the isotonic range (275-295 Omol/L), your body must compensate to absorb it. ‍Too much osmolality (e.g. sports drinks, sodas, seawater) is called “hypertonic”, meaning, the solution has too many particles (carbs, flavoring, electrolytes, etc.,) and not enough water. In the case of sports drinks, this can lead to further dehydration before rehydration can occur. Hypertonic solutions force your body to compensate for the lack of water, trying to dilute the solution before being properly absorbed by the bloodstream. This leads to slower and less efficient hydration, as well as leading to further dehydration before rehydration occurs.

Too little osmolality (e.g. water) is called “hypotonic,” meaning the solution is too diluted for the bloodstream to absorb it, resulting in a lack of electrolytes. This manifests itself often as either cramps or not absorbing much of the water consumed. Hypotonic solutions force your body to work overtime, compensating for the lack of electrolytes. Extra steps are necessary, leading to slower and less efficient hydration, as well as potential cramping from the electrolytes that are being pulled from your muscles. Learn more here.

Why do other hydration brands say that sugar helps hydration?

One leading school of thought in hydration was that glucose (sugar) accelerates the hydration process by activating the pump in your intestinal wall that pushes electrolytes to the bloodstream.  However, NASA’s groundbreaking and extensive research proved the opposite. They found that carbohydrates – sugar in particular – make the product less effective. As carbs are burned, they lose their osmotic benefit. While sugar is faster acting, it’s shorter-lived. By not consuming carbs or sugars using Lightspeed, you’ll stay hydrated for longer. Learn more here.

Where can I find NASA's studies?

While there have been dozens of published studies, here are some relevant pieces of scientific evidence:
Study: Drink Composition and Cycle-Ergometer Endurance in Men: Carbohydrate, Na+, OsmolalityFinding: During high-intensity exercise for 30 minutes, the formula provides over 20% more endurance when compared with water or carb-containing beverages.
Study: Hypervolemia in Men from Drinking Hyperhydration Fluids at Rest and During Exercise(70 minutes of exercise at approx. 70% VO2 max)Finding: The NASA formula maintained plasma volume both at rest and during 70 minutes of exercise. Carb-containing products did not maintain plasma volume.
Study: Vascular Uptake of Rehydration Fluids in Hypohydrated Men at Rest and Exercise(Exercise for 70 minutes at about 70% VO2 max)Finding: Beverages with carbohydrates (sugar) are less efficient at rehydration. This is because as carbs are burned, their osmotic benefits diminish. Isotonic sodium formulas are more effective at rehydration and for restoring and increasing plasma volume.
Study: Sodium Chloride-Citrate Beverages Attenuate Hypovolemia in Men Resting 12 Hours at 2800 m Altitude (nearly 9,200 ft)Finding: At an elevation of 9,000+ feet over 12 hours, plasma volume was better maintained by the NASA-developed formula than water or carb-containing beverages.
